Whereas blades with a coarse toothing are ideal for wood sawing tasks, the saw blades for tasks with metal require a substantially greater number of teeth.

The abbreviation TPI (Teeth Per Inch) For saw blades describes the so-called tooth density − i.e. the number of saw teeth per inch (1 inch = 2.54 cm). Generally the following applies: The higher the tooth density, the harder the material to be processed can be. Or to put it differently: The softer a material is, the more advantageous are greater spaces between the teeth. Since, in the case of softer materials, more chips are produced, which can then be reliably discharged through the greater spaces. Depending on their purpose, sabre saw blades are manufactured of various materials with different properties.
