Do you know how much air we are breathing every single day? More than 10,000 litres of air are required on a daily basis! This roughly corresponds to a capacity of more than 71 bath tubs. Each litre contains dust, at home even a great deal more than outside. Dust can both be visible and invisible. A carpet for instance can hold eight times of its own weight in dust. Bacteria and viruses in the air are always invisible to the naked eye. And there are other critical substances whirling through the air as well. Furniture, laminate or panels can be contaminated by formaldehyde which is emitted to the air in your home or office over several decades. In some cases the air in interior spaces can be polluted up to ten times more by dust and other particles than the air outside. Since most people spend approximately 80 percent of their time in closed rooms, clean and healthy room air is of vital importance. Tidying, vacuuming and ventilating a room often is just not enough to remove the pathogenic particles from the room. The proper air cleaner for allergy sufferers and asthmatics

During the flu season, one cubic metre of air can contain up to 15,000 particles of influenza viruses, and even novel viruses such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus spread mainly via indoor air. In office spaces the breathing air is further polluted by evaporations from adhesives, felt tips and toners.

Healthy indoor climate thanks to "dual and triple protection" filter technology

By combining several different filter technologies, the air cleaners of the AirgoClean® series reliably remove suspended particles and pathogens from the interior air. In addition to the highly effective HEPA filters of filter class 11, filtering bacteria, viruses, pollen, allergens, fine dust particles or mould spores up to a size of 1.0 micrometre from the room air with a separation efficiency of 95 %, the air cleaners AirgoClean® 10 E and AirgoClean® 15 E as well as AirgoClean® 100 E are fitted with an additional DACRON® filter (synthetic fibre prefilter), which is able to filter odours of slight to medium intensity, coarse house dust and animal hair from the room air.

For clean air – without unpleasant odours

As the most powerful device of the AirgoClean® series, the "triple protection" filter technology of the air cleaner AirgoClean® 100 E is additionally equipped with a carbon filter to effectively neutralise in particular tobacco odours, pet odours, kitchen odours, smoke odours as well as formaldehyde and solvent odours. The AirgoClean® 15 E from this air cleaner series can optionally be fitted with a carbon HEPA filter available as accessory.

The highly effective HEPA filters used in all air cleaners of the AirgoClean® series are DOP-tested. The operating principle of these filters is highly efficient. A comparison to HEPA-like filters emphasizes the difference. These filters may have a lower purchase price, but their application quickly reveals the disadvantages. Especially when you're dealing with biogenic and anthropogenic fine particulates of less than one micrometre cheaper imitations cannot demonstrate nearly as good a filtration capacity as true HEPA filters. A quality air cleaner should definitely retain dust and even more so minute particles. This prevents the infinitesimal particles from reaching your lungs and blood stream. Anyone who wants to use an air cleaner to help with allergies will quickly identify the positive properties of a HEPA filter as opposed to other air purification techniques.

Make sure to use original HEPA filters

When using HEPA filters it is crucial that they are true HEPA filters. The classification as true HEPA filters guarantees an optimum quality. Look out for the correct labelling when purchasing air cleaners and filters.

If the filter efficiency is merely described as "HEPA-like" or as "comparable to HEPA filters", caution should be exercised. It may yield less than satisfactory results.

The operation of air purification units with an integrated ionizer is characterized by thoroughness and reliability. The ionizer produces negative ions that have an anti-static effect. Thanks to these ions the particles in the air become negatively charged, which makes them heavier than the surrounding air. As a result they gradually settle on the ground. Afterwards they can simply be vacuumed off. Speaking of vacuum-cleaning: Quite often more dust is raised in the process than sucked in. But using the ionizer technology this can be prevented, the heavier dust can be vacuumed off without difficulty. Applying this technology the room air is purified successfully and effectively. In addition, the air is even enriched with active oxygen.

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina demands additional efforts from environmental and health policy makers to further reduce the air pollution with particulate matter. They state that the sources of fine dust are more diverse and the resulting damage to health is more serious than previously assumed.

Fine dust favours the development of serious diseases

Fine dust particles, also known as particulate matter, are respirable particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 µm. The smaller these fine particles are, the deeper they can penetrate the body and organ systems. Particulate matter can cause inflammation in the bronchi and lungs, and slow down children's lung growth. According to the Leopoldina, other consequences of particulate matter include heart attacks, strokes and accelerated arteriosclerosis. Inflammatory processes have also been observed in the brain and have been linked to a faster development of dementia in older people as well as delayed intelligence development in children. In addition to inflammatory reactions, fine dust can also cause damage to the cardiovascular system in other ways.

Particulate matter is responsible for 15 percent of global corona deaths

Researchers have long suspected that the pollution with particulate matter has an influence on the course of disease in COVID-19 patients, since particulate matter weakens the immune system and attacks the lung tissue. This is now confirmed by new research results from the renowned University of Oxford, published in the medical journal "Cardiovascular Research". The results show that there is a correlation between high pollution with particulate matter and an increased risk of dying from COVID-19. The scientists have calculated that on average 15 percent of global corona deaths are due to victims having inhaled polluted air over a long period of time. The research results suggest that particulate matter pollution is an important factor increasing the mortality risk from COVID-19.
