Moisture management in the ice rink
Dehumidifiers: clear-cut victory against accidents & damage to property
Due to the difference in temperature between air and the icy surface, condensation inevitably forms in every ice rink – especially when humid air keeps flowing in from outside through the refrigeration system. The solution against dripping water on the ice and against damage to property constitutes a dehumidifier. It prevents condensation in the offing.
Basically, a closed indoor ice-skating rink can be seen as large fridge – which causes the typical problems: Condensate drips from the ceiling and lead to irregularities, rough spots or puddles on the ice – hence increasing the risk of accidents for ice-skaters, curlers and ice hockey players. Misting poses yet another potential hazard. By and large, an unpleasant, dank room climate prevails in ice rinks that are not professionally dehumidified – not a good basis for skating fun, let alone a top performance of dancing on ice. Furthermore, condensation leads to mould on parts of the building as well as to rust on pipes or metal girders: First the paint chips off, owing to the relentless influence of moisture, then decay and corrosion set in. The consequential costs for the operator quickly go sky high. Therefore, preventive action must be taken against the high humidity levels, so that the ice is safe and the rink can be operated economically.
Whether mobile device or stationary system: TTR dehumidifiers for use in ice rinks
Dehumidifiers with desiccant technology clearly win against the humidity in ice-skating rinks: Unlike condensation dryers, Trotec dehumidifiers of the TTR series can also dehumidify efficiently at very low temperatures. Depending on the size of the ice rink, different performance classes are available from Trotec: ranging from mobile desiccant dehumidifiers to the more powerful stationary desiccant dehumidifiers. All in all, the TTR series impresses with a very high dehumidification performance even at low dew point temperatures, with innovative Monoventic control electronics, premium fan, integrated heat recovery and microprocessor control with plain text display for function monitoring and energy management. This way the icy surface remains smooth and slippery and the building stays dry.
For large installations: The TTR 8200 dehumidifies 8,200 cubic metres of air per hour
For dehumidifying the amounts of air in very large ice-skating rinks the highest performance class is called into play. Desiccant dehumidifiers of type TTR 8200 with the Trisorp Dual principle of operation. These dehumidifiers dehumidify up to 8,200 cubic metres of air per hour – i.e. even in large-dimensioned ice rinks condensation can be prevented with few devices.
Dehumidification via hose systems in the indoor ice rink’s ceiling
In order to reduce the humidity level reliably in a large to very large ice-skating rink, a hose system is installed at the ceiling to ensure the dry air supply. The dehumidifiers of type TTR 8200 are powerful enough to transport dry air over long distances and to discharge humid air as well. In addition to the devices and air transport hoses Trotec also provides the measuring technology and data loggers for the humidity management in indoor ice-skating rinks.
