Inside bridges, steal beams, electric lines and technical rooms are subject to high humidity. For decades, it has now proven an efficient alternative to high-maintenance anti-rust paint to instead use dehumidifiers to keep bridges dry on the inside. Trotec desiccant dehumidifier of different capacities are used for dehumidification.

In many bridges, problems related to condensed water inside the bridge result from the location. That is particularly true for bridges over rivers because humidity above waters is high. In addition, rapid changes in weather conditions result in sudden temperature drops. In such situations, condensed water builds up and runs over structural metal components or into the electrical system. The resulting costs are high: corroded steel beams, restoration, power failures and regular renewals of the anti-rust paint. Painting, however, does not always have the desired effect because many small niches and corners are difficult to access for painters. At such weak spots, rust can spread unnoticed until major problems result. Dry air, on the other hand, reaches even the smallest corner and is an effective corrosion protection.

As a preventive anti-rust measure, a dehumidification system may even almost completely replace anti-rust paint on the inside — and it definitely postpones repainting by years. Maintenance of bridges is considerably reduced. The investment in the dehumidifier thus pays off.

Desiccant dehumidifiers protect steel construction and electrical system

Depending on the size of the bridge, construction details and used materials, in most cases dehumidification systems are used which comprise several dehumidifiers of different performance classes. For dehumidification in bridges, the Trotec Group recommends to use the desiccant humidifiers of the TTR series. They even efficiently dehumidify to a target value below 50 per cent relative humidity at temperatures below zero. Mobile compact units such as TTR 200 up to TTR 500 D, for example, can be used in small technical rooms, control boxes or niches. For larger hollows, stationary units TTR 800 up to TTR 13500 can be used. To keep hollows of several (kilo)metres length dry, the really large stationary industrial desiccant dehumidifiers are used, such as they are built for electric cables. For long distances, air is supplied and removed through air transport hoses. All industrial dehumidifiers of the TTR series are developed and manufactured in Germany according to the highest quality standards — that makes them so robust and reliable. In addition to the devices and air transport hoses, Trotec also provides the measuring technology and data loggers for dehumidification systems in bridges.
