For safe production: dehumidification in the meat industry

Trotec industrial dryers operate reliably, thus preventing condensation, odour nuisance and the spread of germs – the perfect humidity control!

Especially in meat processing and sausage production, optimal hygiene is paramount. This is the only way to guarantee a good product quality. Therefore, strict hygienic requirements have to be met when handling meat – particularly in cooling areas where raw products are processed. But due to the low temperatures and high humidity levels, this is exactly where to expect the greatest dangers: condensation, corrosion and the consequently affected hygiene. The odour nuisance in meat-processing establishments, which naturally develops at high humidity levels, must not be underestimated either. A Trotec industrial dryer quickly masters the situation and offers reliable humidity regulation in this sensitive production area.

Protective clothing, disinfection, compliance with the cold chain and other strict hygienic requirements are on the agenda in the processing of fresh produce. The working areas are regularly cleaned in a meticulous way and the products are treated with caution throughout the production process. All this, however, is of no avail for as long as the climatic conditions are not quite right. One of the greatest risks can be found in the air – humidity. If the latter is not ideally regulated, the production workers have to overcome many difficulties.

Condensation – a serious issue

Especially in cool areas, too high humidity values must not be underestimated. In cold storage houses and other operating areas of the meat industry, where the cold chain has to be maintained, there is a risk of condensation. If the dew point in the air is higher than at the surface of working areas, walls or ceilings, condensation forms quickly. This is because the air is cooled down by the cold surfaces and the water vapour condenses to water. If drops fall onto the unpacked meat products, germs can form. Cardboard boxes absorb humidity as well, which can ruin entire stocks. Due to the high humidity, both the development of odours and the perceived coldness increase significantly. These two factors lead to a reduced staff productivity. Companies have to face growing sickness absence rates.

Optimum protection thanks to focussed humidity regulation

Create an agreeable and valuable working environment. And yet: a cool atmosphere is a must. Even if temperatures are kept particularly low in cold storage houses and working areas, this does not have a significant impact on the humidity regulation. Especially in cold stores the relative humidity cannot be decreased to less than 70 to 95 per cent simply through temperature. The use of high-performance dehumidifiers is the only solution. The stationary industrial dryers of the TTR series from Trotec are true allrounders, especially at low temperatures.

Using dehumidifiers in the meat processing industry – the benefits:

  • no condensation
  • less hygiene-related risks
  • the prevention of germ formation
  • quick drying of cut surfaces
  • more agreeable perceived coldness for the staff
  • significantly lower odour nuisance
  • quick drying after cleaning work
  • no slip hazard

Stationary drying systems

All dehumidifiers of the DH series come with a closed dehumidification system. This means that no additional fresh air supply is needed. They can be subsequently installed without difficulty and adapted to the environmental requirements. The devices particularly impress with their broad operating range from -15 to +70 degrees Celsius and their capacity to dehumidify any working area quickly and efficiently. Durable, low in maintenance and flexibly adjustable – that is what the models of the TTR dehumidification series stand for. They are available in different versions: ranging from the TTR 800, the compact, high-performance industrial desiccant dehumidifier with a dehumidification performance of 86 kg/24 h and an air flow rate of 750 m³/h, to the TTR 8200 with a maximum dehumidification performance of 46.2 kg/h. The choice is yours.

Designed for the use in hygiene-sensitive areas, many models of both series are also available as stainless steel versions.

Make use of Trotec's best practice industrial services

Since every industrial undertaking has characteristic process flows, installations and facilities, every air treatment solution demands case-specific device configurations. All in all, the combined effects of air currents, humidity conditions and temperature fluctuations are often hard to calculate on a purely theoretical basis, e.g. in airlock areas or on conveying paths. The consequence: Unnecessary additional costs due to an overestimated demand or – even worse – solutions not working sufficiently in real life.
