In the construction phase of a wind turbine, the plant’s components are sometimes stored for months in very large depots such as halls or temporary storage tents prior to assembly. To prevent damage caused by corrosion or frost during storage, a sophisticated system for humidity regulation is necessary.

Each season has its particular challenges and dangers for the tower elements, all metal parts and the control electronics of a wind turbine: in the summer, the humidity level may rise above 80 per cent, and in the winter, there is a danger of frost damage due to the penetrated moisture. Moreover, condensation water resulting from temperature drops presents a serious problem. Nowadays, the traditional method of heating storage spaces to keep them dry is no longer sufficient. For one thing, the heat loss and thus the energy costs are too high, and for another, the humidity level is particularly extreme, especially in the summer. Heating additionally to reduce the humidity level to the desired 60 per cent does not make much sense in this case. With the desiccant dehumidification offered by the stationary high-performance units of the TTR series Trotec provides a contemporary solution feeding in dry air and discharging moisture.

An enormous challenge: the size of the depot

Wind turbine components such as tower sections are one thing above all: very large. Accordingly, air quantities of up to 75,000 cubic metres have to be dehumidified in storage halls or tents. This can be achieved with high-performance TTR 8200 devices with Trisorp Dual functional principle. This desiccant dehumidifier dehumidifies up to 9,000 cubic metres of air per hour, which means that even in mega depots humidity can be regulated with few devices. The TTR series is regarded as the most economical of its kind and impresses with a very high dehumidification performance even at low dew point temperatures, with advanced Monoventic control electronics, premium fan, integrated heat recovery and microprocessor control with plain text display for function monitoring and energy management.

Another challenge: long air transport routes

In order to regulate the humidity uniformly in a depot with a length of 50, 70 or even 90 metres, ideally a ceiling-suspended hose system is installed. The desiccant dehumidifiers of type TTR 8200 offer the required power to transport the dry air over such a long distance and to discharge humid air as well. In order to save expensive storage space, the industrial dehumidifiers can also be set up in a weather-proof model or in containers outside the depot.
